Concentration Areas

The PPGECEM has two areas of concentration, “Science Teaching” and “Mathematics Education”, integrated by three lines of research:

1) Scientific Culture, Technology, Information and Communication

Considering that science and technology occupy and indisputably and privileged place in culture, in general, with a growing demand in terms of socialization of scientific knowledge, this line of research investigates the public communication of science in formal and non-formal spaces of education, with particular interest in the approximation of science with other cultural manisfestations. In that sense, it critically and reflexively explores the production and use of information and communication technologies in the processes of training, teaching and learning to understand cyberculture and technological evolution, as well as the production of multimedia materials of a didactic-pedagogical nature that contribute to the improvement of skills and competences, aiming at a better performance in the activities of popularization, public communication and Science Teaching  and Mathematics Education.

2) History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science and Mathematics

This line of research involves the study of History, Philosophy and Sociology of Sciences and Mathematics, seeking a deeper understanding of the nature and the content of scientific and mathematical knowledge; of the relations beteween science and its historical, technological, social and cultural context; the dynamics of creation, debates, the diffusion and historical-social construction of knowledge; and the constraints and limits of Science and Mathematics. It also seeks to study and reflect on existing research on these themes and their applications in teaching and learning processes, opening the way to new research and approaches, aimed at its application in the educational field.

3) Methodology, Didatics and Teacher Training in Science, Teaching and Mathematics Education

This line includes the teaching and learning processes and socio-cognitive interactions through research on curricular execution, the classroom, its use as a laboratory and as a training space, the use and impact of didactic materials and theoretical tools as well as the cognitive and scientific foundations that justify them. It also studies the formation, development and modeling of concepts and problems in the field of Sciences and Mathematics. The research projects related to this line aim at the production of means that make it possible to anticipate and overcome possible didactic and epistemological difficulties that occur in pedagogical practice.
